Selling
Sympathy Tributes
|
|
As we have discussed before,
selling flowers is selling emotion.
|
Sympathy Tributes are an important part of
the grieving process. Helping your customers work through
this difficult time is very important.
Most funeral schedules do not allow time for
ordering specialty flowers so selling by color is best. If
your supplier does not have one blue flower, they may have another
type of blue flower in stock.
Listen to the customer to find out what they
want the service to be like. Will there be a church
service? Will there be viewing? (A time when friends and
family come to pay tribute.) Do they have a color in mind?

Pricing: This will apply to all areas.
Decide your mark up. The general rule
is 2-3 times markup on flowers. Generally flower shops loss
1/3 of their flowers, sometimes more and sometimes less. It
should balance out. If not, rethink your ordering
process. Flowers are a perishable like food in a restaurant
and you will have a certain amount of unused products.
Labor percentages are figures at
20-45%. Simple items will have a labor charge starting at
20% and a more difficult piece could be charge at 45%. This
is why a good designer is so valuable. How many designs can
be produced per day. (I never figure by hour as you allow
for set up (work up and sale of flowers) and clean up included.
Buying - can make or break a business.
I really do not know of any business who has not
made mistakes in this area. Just remember, inventory not
used is money not in the bank to run your
business. We will cover this in greater detail in study 2.
